Teaching

With more than 15 years of teaching experience in different settings and formats (e.g. private lessons, chamber music coachings, college classes and masterclasses), Alexandrina has a working knowledge and understanding of the needs of violin and viola students of all levels, ages, and walks of life.

She has drawn pupils attending some of the top ranking public and private schools throughout NYC such as Special Music School (P.S. 859), Horace Mann, Columbia Grammar and Preparatory, Brearley, Lycée Français, LaGuardia High School, Bronx High School of Science, Bard High School, as well as Precollege students from Manhattan School of Music, Mannes, and Juilliard. As a chamber music coach, she has presented and performed along her students at venues such as the Met Museum’s Balcony bar, Le Poisson Rouge, Dimenna Center, and NJ’s South Orange Performing Arts Center. While pursuing her Doctorate at Juilliard, Alexandrina was also hired as a teaching assistant in the school’s Music History and Theory departments.

Whether she is working with a beginner with no previous musical experience, a student who plays in the school orchestra ensemble, or someone who wants to refresh and improve their command of the instrument, Alexandrina makes the learning process fun and engaging. By establishing a warm personal rapport in a safe and relaxed learning environment, her students feel comfortable trying out new ideas and exploring their creativity. A cornerstone of her teaching philosophy is the necessity of a tailored approach to her students’ unique learning styles. No two people learn in the same way, and Alexandrina addresses that by designing various exercises for mastering specific technical and musical challenges, and by choosing repertoire that complements and encourages her students’ aspirations.

In her teaching practice, Dr. Boyanova draws upon her own training, which was shaped by experiencing many different teaching models in Bulgaria, Italy, and the US. Since childhood, she was given the know-how of building solid technical and musical fundamentals. Under the mentorship of Salvatore Accardo in Italy, Alexandrina further mastered her virtuosity and developed acute sense for the fine stylistic nuances that mark the music of different eras. Completing her education in the US, Alexandrina studied Baroque violin with Robert Mealy, and with Mari Kimura she explored different ways of using interactive media software in performance. She has also had the guidance of other notable violinists such as Aaron Rosand, Oleh Krysa, Leonidas Kavakos, Jaime Laredo, Pamela Frank, Sergei Kravtchenko, Andres Cardenes, and Agustin Leon Ara.
